Does distance from the rest of the cluster matter?

I was wondering if it is worth setting up a validator in Southern Africa where the latency to Europe is about 130ms and the latency to New York over 220ms?

Will this result in a skipping of votes? or not being able to produce leader blocks in time?

The Datacenter will be able to provide the required bandwidth.

Any thoughts here would be much appreciated.

i have the same question bump

Hi folks and welcome to the forum!

I’m not 100% sure, you can probably find more people who would know on Discord ( beware of Discord scams, though! ).

If you check out the world map on it looks like there aren’t any validators in southern Africa yet, but there is one rather far away in Australia.

I think that setting up validators across the world in different regions would probably be good for the decentralization of the network, and I’d hope it wouldn’t be an issue, but I don’t know.

If you find an answer in Discord or anywhere else, please post back here for the benefit of other forum users!
